Shine (Take That song) and The Starlings

"Shine" is the second single taken from Take That's comeback album, Beautiful World (2006). It became Take That's sixth consecutive number one single and their tenth number one overall, making them one of only seven acts in the history of the UK charts to have more than nine number one hits.

Background

"Shine" was released on 26 February 2007 and features lead vocals by Mark Owen. A 'live' version was recorded at a session with BBC Radio 2, and appears on the CD singles of "I'd Wait for Life" and "Reach Out".

The song went on to win the British single of the year award at the 2008 BRIT Awards making it Take That's seventh Brit Award.

The live version of "Shine" performed during the band's Beautiful World Tour in 2007 featured an intro that was taken from the finale to the song "Mr. Blue Sky" by the British pop/rock group Electric Light Orchestra - this was also done on the group's subsequent The Circus Tour in 2009 and Progress Live Tour in 2011.

UK music licensing body PPL announced in December 2009 that this was the second most played and used song in the UK of the 2000s.

The song is written in the key signature of E flat major; however, on some live versions it is performed in D major.

When Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams appeared on BBC Radio 1 Live promoting their single Shame, Williams performed a cover of Shine.

In December 2011 Olly Murs covered "Shine" when he joined Gary Barlow for his live show at the Royal Albert Hall. Chart performance

During its first week at the top of the UK Singles Chart, the single rose from #20 to #2 on the Irish Singles Chart. The single has been certified Gold in the UK with sales of 493,000.| Music video

The video for "Shine" was directed by Justin Dickel with a concept of recreating a Busby Berkeley style musical number. It premiered on Channel 4 on Thursday 25 January 2007 at 11:05 p.m. Use in media

The song was featured in several commercials for the Morrisons supermarkets in the UK, fronted by actress Denise van Outen, comedian Nick Hancock, television presenter Gabby Logan, gardener Diarmuid Gavin, singer Lulu, and television presenter Richard Hammond.

It was then brought back in an instrumental form in 2013 as part of the 'More of what Matters' campaign.

It is also used on the third series of The Kevin Bishop Show in the celebrity book club sketch.

It has also been used by Gala Bingo to mark the start of their bingo sessions, in club, between 2008 and 2014. Use by other artists

The song is sampled in Lily Allen's 2009 song "Who'd Have Known", which in turn is sampled in T-Pain's 2011 single "5 O'Clock". The Starlings and Shine (Take That song)

Starlings were an alternative rock band from London, England, formed in 1989, acting as a vehicle for New Zealand-born singer/guitarist Chris Sheehan. The group was dissolved by Sheehan around the release of their last ep. Sheehan went on to record two LPs under the name starlings as the only member and Producer/Engineer.

History

Chris Sheehan (1965-December 18, 2014) was born in Palmerston North. Sheehan had been a teenage star in his native New Zealand, playing guitar in the new wave band The Dance Exponents between 1983 and the late 1980s. When the group split up he moved to Los Angeles, and guested on the debut solo album by Jane Wiedlin. He also played guitar on Curve's debut EP in 1990. Initially a five-piece band, Sheehan sacked all original Starlings members other than drummer and fellow New Zealander Barry Blackler and recruited Northampton-born bass guitarist Matt Parkin. The band were likened to The Jesus and Mary Chain, and supported Curve on their tour of the UK and Ireland in 1991. After their first EP, the band signed to Dave Stewart's Anxious Records. The band's debut album Valid was released in 1992, the songs documenting Sheehan's withdrawal from heroin, followed two years later by Too Many Dogs, with songs described as "vicious, dark, misanthropic gems", the latter released in the United States by Atlantic Records, and attracting critical acclaim if not commercial success. Contractual difficulties had led the band to split up in 1991 shortly before the recording of 'valid'. Parkin and Blackler had also acted as the rhythm section for The Jesus and Mary Chain between 1991 and 1992.

Sheehan played with Babylon Zoo, and The Mutton Birds in the latter half of the 1990s and returned with a solo album, Planet Painkiller in 2000, under the name Chris Starling. In 2002 the album Sounds like... Chris Starling was released by Popchild records. He joined The Sisters of Mercy as rhythm guitarist later that year, although he has now left the band.

In July 2013, Sheehan announced through Fundrazr that he was suffering from incurable cancer (Stage 4 metastatic nodular melanoma)

In December 2014, various sources reported that Chris Sheehan (aka Chris Starling) had lost his long battle with cancer.
